1. District historical background
The name "Samui" is from an unknown language; it has been presumed that the word
"Samui" came from the Malay language and some have said it is derived from the Hainan
language and/or Tamil language; it has even been assumed to be derived from the name
of a tree. However, "Koh Samui District" is today is an important district of Suratthani.

Location and Border
Koh Samui is an island located on the north east of Suratthani province with
distance of 84 kilometers from the city and 750 kilometers from Bangkok.
